The server offers a public access to NetHack using Telnet (standard port 23). The address of the server is hal.pp.fishpool.fi. Log in with username nethack.
Because all public users will be running the game as the same user, you will have to give a name for your character. Player names are protected with passwords. When you enter a name that has not been registered yet, you must choose a password. When you come back later to continue the game or to start another, you must enter the password in order to start the game.
If you don't like the default configuration of the game, you can adjust it with
the 'O' command. You can also change your personal option settings upon login
by entering them as a single comma-separated string, which will be used as the
value of the NETHACKOPTIONS environment variable. The changes you
make to your personal options are saved, and will be the default setting for
future logins. Consult the NetHack guidebook for correct syntax. You can unset
all options by entering a single space (" ") as the string.
This server is located in southern Finland with a fairly fast connection to the Internet. However, this is not the only public NetHack server available, and for your own convenience you might want to try some of the other servers. There is a list of servers available at The NetHack Index.
The server is running the latest stable version of Debian GNU/Linux.
